About PDF2MDTool
PDF2MDTool is a small, single-purpose website: it converts a PDF into Markdown text inside your own browser. There is no account, no upload, and no server-side processing — the file you choose is read by JavaScript running on your device, and the extracted text is yours to copy or download.
Who runs this site
This site is designed, built, and maintained by Zhongying Shi, an independent developer. It is not operated by a company, and it is not connected to Adobe, Mozilla, or any PDF software vendor.
If you find something broken or want to suggest a change, see the contact page.
What the tool actually does
The converter uses Mozilla PDF.js v6.3.289 (Apache-2.0) to read the PDF text layer. Text is grouped by page and by approximate line position, then emitted as editable Markdown.
That is deliberately a conservative scope. It is not OCR, and it is not page-layout reconstruction. Scanned image-only PDFs will produce little or no output because there is no text layer to read.
How the converter is tested
The homepage lists five public documents that have been run through the page and verified to return selectable text — including an 80-page NIST publication and a 69-page Federal Reserve report. They are real published PDFs rather than demo fixtures, so the numbers on that page reflect real files at real lengths.
A passing check means PDF.js opened the file and returned text. It does not certify OCR quality, table fidelity, or semantic accuracy, and we do not claim otherwise.
How this site is funded
PDF2MDTool is free and has no paywall. Hosting and development time are covered in part by affiliate commissions: when a page contains a link to a third-party product or service and a reader buys through it, we may earn a commission at no additional cost to the reader.
Affiliate relationships do not change the tool's behaviour. The converter itself contains no affiliate links. Pages carrying affiliate links say so at the top. You can read more in our privacy policy.
What we do not do
- We do not upload, store, or transmit your PDF. Processing stays in the browser.
- We do not keep conversion history and do not require an account.
- We do not sell personal data.
- We do not promise conversion accuracy that the underlying library cannot deliver.
Found a problem? If a PDF converts badly, an email to [email protected] is genuinely useful — bad conversions are the one thing most worth fixing, and real examples are how they get identified.
